Boerne is the county seat of Kendall County, about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio on I-10. It was founded in 1849 by German immigrants who first called the settlement Tusculum, and platted under its present name in 1852 after the German writer Ludwig Börne. It incorporated in 1909.
What makes it unusual for chimney work is the building stock. More than 140 historic limestone structures still stand downtown, and the Kendall County Courthouse, built in 1870, is the second-oldest in Texas. Boerne has genuine nineteenth-century masonry of a kind that simply does not exist in the newer Houston suburbs.
That does not mean every house is historic. Boerne has grown substantially and there is plenty of modern construction around the older core. But it does mean we approach a Boerne job without assumptions: a limestone chimney from the 1800s and a framed chase from 2015 need entirely different work, and the inspection tells us which we are looking at.
Nineteenth-century masonry was built with soft lime mortar. Repointing it with modern hard cement traps moisture and damages the stone. Where a chimney is genuinely historic, the material matters as much as the workmanship.
Boerne sits higher and cooler than San Antonio, and fireplaces here see real use through the winter. More burning means more creosote, and a genuine reason for an annual sweep rather than a nominal one.
Hard freezes are uncommon in the Hill Country but they do arrive. When one does, water already sitting inside open mortar joints is what causes spalling. Sound joints and an intact crown are the defence.
