Inside the City, Chimneys Are Older Than the Suburbs Suggest

Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States, incorporated in 1837 and covering roughly 640 square miles across Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. The city itself is a very different chimney market from the master-planned suburbs that surround it.

Inside the loop, neighbourhoods such as the Heights, Montrose, River Oaks and the Museum District carry housing from the early and mid twentieth century. Those are genuine masonry chimneys, frequently with clay tile liners, now eighty years old or more. Bungalows and period homes in the Heights predate the second world war entirely.

Further out, Memorial, Meyerland, Sharpstown and the post-war subdivisions add mid-century masonry, and the newer developments at the city edges bring framed chases into the mix. Houston contains the full range, which is precisely why we inspect before quoting rather than assuming.

Pre-war housing needs different handling

Heights and Montrose bungalows frequently have unlined or clay-lined masonry chimneys built for coal or a long-replaced appliance. Those need a camera inspection and often relining before a modern insert can be fitted safely.

Post-war masonry is at its maintenance point

Memorial, Meyerland and Sharpstown housing from the 1950s and 1960s carries mortar that has had seventy years of Gulf Coast weather. Repointing at this stage prevents a rebuild later.

Bayou flooding is a chimney issue

Houston bayou system has flooded repeatedly, including during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. If floodwater reached a firebox, the chimney needs inspecting before use, because liner and damper damage is not visible from the room.

Heat, humidity and slow drying

Persistent Gulf humidity keeps masonry damp for extended periods, which draws water deeper through failed joints and encourages moss and efflorescence on brickwork.

Our Services in Houston

The full Lowes Chimney Sweep inventory is available across the City of Houston. Masonry, liner and crown work carry the emphasis inside the city because the housing is considerably older than the surrounding suburbs.

Crowns

A cracked crown on an older masonry chimney lets water straight into the structure below. It is among the cheapest repairs available and prevents some of the most expensive damage.

Leaks & Waterproofing

In older Houston masonry water usually enters through open mortar joints, a failed crown or flashing rather than a chase cover. We trace the actual entry point before quoting.

Masonry & Structural

Inside the loop, mortar has had decades or in some cases a century of weather. Repointing at the right moment is the difference between a maintenance job and a rebuild.

Liners & Venting

Pre-war Houston chimneys are frequently unlined or lined with clay tiles that have cracked. A liner is required before fitting most modern inserts, and a camera inspection is the only reliable way to assess condition.

Houston Chimney Questions

My house is a Heights bungalow. Is the chimney different?

Usually yes. Pre-war Houston chimneys are frequently unlined or lined with clay tiles that have since cracked, and many were built for coal or an appliance replaced decades ago. A camera inspection tells you what is actually up there.

Do I need relining before fitting an insert?

Very often, in older Houston housing. A modern insert requires a correctly sized liner, and an unlined or cracked flue cannot be used safely with one.

My home flooded during Harvey. Does that affect the fireplace?

It can. If floodwater reached the firebox, the chimney should be inspected before use. Water damages liners, dampers and fireboxes in ways not visible from the room.

What is the most common repair inside the city?

Mortar and crown work on older masonry, followed by flashing. Chase covers matter far more in the newer suburbs than they do inside the loop.

How often should a Houston chimney be swept?

Once a year for a fireplace in regular use. The burning season is short here but creosote still accumulates.

Will the work make a mess indoors?

No. Covers go down before we start and dust-controlled equipment runs throughout the visit.

Do you work weekends?

Yes, seven days a week including Sundays.
